Healthy eating in childhood means they will have less chance of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers. It will also mean they feel better, look better and enjoy life more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is healthy eating?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, children need to be physically active and eat the right amount of nutrients to balance the energy they use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/guidelines\/australian-dietary-guidelines-1-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Dietary Guidelines<\/a>&nbsp;recommend children should enjoy a wide variety of foods from these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/The%20Guidelines\/n55i_australian_guide_to_healthy_eating.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5 food groups<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>fruit<\/li><li>vegetables, legumes and beans<\/li><li>cereals (including breads, rice, pasta and noodles), preferably wholegrain<\/li><li>lean meat, fish, poultry and\/or alternatives<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/dairy-foods\">milks, yoghurts, cheeses<\/a>&nbsp;and\/or alternatives (children under 2 should have full-fat milk, but older children and adolescents can have reduced-fat varieties)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Children should limit their intake of foods that contain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/dietary-fats\">saturated fat<\/a>, added salt or added sugar.
