Born in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Roman-Britain\">Roman Britain<\/a>\u00a0in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432\u00a0CE\u00a0to convert the Irish to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Christianity\">Christianity<\/a>. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/legends\">legends<\/a>\u00a0grew up around him\u2014for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/plant\/shamrock\">shamrock<\/a>\u00a0to explain the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Trinity-Christianity\">Trinity<\/a>. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts.
