COVID-19: Diabetes

If you have diabetes and are over 65 years, or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander over 50 years, the most important thing you can do is to follow your care plan and attend regular appointments with your health management team.

Below are some ways to keep yourself healthy:

  • Take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The ‘Sick Day Management Kit’ can include things like your blood glucose diary, hypo treatment and insulin. Have it ready to use if you start to feel unwell.
  • If you do not have an Action Plan or Management Kit, speak with your doctor or diabetes specialist.
  • If you need to go to hospital, take your medications with you.
  • Avoid foods high in sugar, carbohydrates and fat.
  • Drink plenty of water, and eat food such as lean protein, leafy vegetables and fruit.
  • Ensure all vaccinations are up to date.
  • If you live alone, make prior arrangements with family, friends and neighbours if you need help.
  • Be active, keep moving. Engage in general household work, cleaning and gardening. Regularly walk around, up and down stairs, reducing hours sat down.
