Nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Helpful feeding information for your school-age child

School-age children (ages 6 to 12) need healthy foods and nutritious snacks. They have a steady but slow rate of growth and usually eat 4 to 5 times a day (with snacks). Many food habits, likes, and dislikes are set during this time. Family, friends, and the media effect their food choices and eating habits. School-age children are often willing to eat a wider variety of foods than their younger siblings. Eating healthy after-school snacks is important, too, as these snacks may contribute up to one-fourth of the total calorie intake for the day. School-age children can also help with meal prep.

At Scots Collage our educators prep only the best variety of fruit and vegetables, giving our children a wide variety of choices, most of the popular fruit and vegetable choices are oranges, apples, pears, watermelon, mandarins, Banana’s Capsicums, carrots and cucumbers. The children a given a decent serving of each, plus they also receive a choice of gluten free crackers and rice cakes and cheese.

The children enjoy afternoon tea time as it allows them to sit around and interact with their peers whilst enjoying their healthy afternoon tea snack, Most of the children tend want seconds and even thirds. Educators take this time to speak with the children and discuss healthy eating habits with them, what it means to maintain a positive and healthy diet.
